Following our recent sell out evening with the great Sugar Ray Leonard, we could not resist the chance to bring you the second member of the famous GOLDEN FOUR and another member of boxing royalty. In a golden era of boxing, away from the lure of the heavyweights, many of the so-called ‘little men’ of boxing were lighting up the ring.

Panamanian Durán was one of those ‘little men’. Whilst he may have been little in stature at 5ft 7in, he was anything but little in power – his ‘Hands of Stone’ nickname being deserved for the power and ferocity of his punching.

Of the 119 fights he took part in between 1968 and 2001, Durán’s powerful onslaught of punches dispatched 71 opponents (59%) via the KO route.

Such power saw Durán quickly rack up 28 straight wins, manoeuvering him into position for his first world title tilt against Scotland’s Ken Buchanan at New York City’s Madison Square Garden – for the Scot’s WBA Lightweight title that Durán won via a 13th round TKO.

He lost in a non-title bout in his 32nd fight against Esteban de Jesús. It wasn’t until 42 fights, eight-and-a-half years later, including a revenge win over de Jesús that added the WBC Lightweight crown to his WBA title, that Durán next lost.

That loss was to the great Sugar Ray Leonard who defeated Durán in the alleged ‘No Más’ fight, via an 8th Round TKO, to win back the WBC Welterweight title that Durán had taken off him the fight before.

Durán’s third world title, the WBA Light-Middleweight crown, came via a typically brutal disassembling of the unbeaten, yet untested American Davey Moore in his 81st fight.

In 1983 Durán stepped up to middleweight to face the sizeable challenge of wrestling away Marvin Hagler’s WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight titles. The Panamanian took Hagler the distance, and he was ahead on the cards of two judges before a furious Hagler rally led to a 15 Round unanimous decision for the American.

The fourth, and final, world title that Durán captured was Iran Barkley’s WBC Middleweight belt, that he won via a Split Decision in February, 1989 at Atlantic City’s Convention Hall before finally retiring in July 2001.

Roberto’s extraordinary achievement’s over 119 were recognised after being inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame in October 2006, with a similar induction for the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June 2007.
